A Reliable Solution for Replacing Missing Teeth
Tooth loss affects more than appearance. Even a single missing tooth can impact chewing, speech, and long-term oral health. At Peter K. Cocolis, Jr. DMD & Associates, we provide custom dental bridge restorations to replace missing teeth and restore balance to your smile.
As a trusted dentist proudly serving Springfield, Burke, Fairfax Station, and Clifton, Dr. Cocolis and our expert dental team approach restorative care with a focus on careful planning, strong materials, and long-term function with your comfort and oral health in mind. Here, you’re treated like one of the family. Whether you are missing front teeth or teeth in the back of the mouth, a well-designed bridge can restore comfort and confidence, while protecting your remaining teeth and overall dental health.
What Is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is a fixed dental restoration used for tooth replacement. It fills the gap created by one or more missing teeth by anchoring a false tooth, also called an artificial tooth or replacement tooth, to neighboring teeth. The structure typically includes:
- One or more artificial teeth
- Dental crowns placed on adjacent teeth, known as abutment teeth
- A durable framework made of porcelain, metal, or a combination of these materials
A traditional dental bridge literally “bridges” the space between healthy teeth on either side of the gap.
Why is Replacing Missing Teeth Important?
When a missing tooth is left untreated, several issues may develop:
- Shifting of surrounding teeth
- Increased risk of gum disease
- Difficulty chewing or bite imbalance
- Changes in the shape of your face
- Additional tooth loss
- Bone loss in the jaw
- Higher risk of dental emergencies
The tooth roots of natural teeth help stimulate bone. Without that stimulation, bone loss can occur over time. Early tooth replacement protects oral health and preserves the alignment of remaining teeth.
Types of Dental Bridges
There are several types of dental bridges available. The right type of dental bridge depends on the location of the gap, the number of missing teeth, and the health of the supporting teeth. Our team will walk you through these options and ensure the right bridge is selected for your unique needs.
Traditional Bridge
A traditional bridge is the most common option. It uses dental crowns placed over abutment teeth on both sides of the gap to support a false tooth in between.
A conventional dental bridge is usually suggested when there are healthy teeth on either side of the gap, the lost tooth is located toward the rear of the mouth, or solid chewing support is necessary. This type of bridge offers excellent stability and long-term durability.
Cantilever Bridge
A cantilever bridge is used when there is only one adjacent tooth available for support. With this bridge design, the artificial tooth attaches to only one abutment tooth, so support is provided from just one side of the gap.
A cantilever dental bridge may be used in specific situations but requires careful evaluation to ensure proper balance and bite alignment.
Maryland Bridge
A Maryland bridge is often used to replace missing front teeth. Rather than utilizing complete dental crowns, this method involves a porcelain structure, metal wings or ceramic extensions, and bonding to the rear surfaces of neighboring teeth.
This conservative treatment option preserves more natural tooth structure but may not be suitable for areas exposed to heavy chewing pressure.
Implant-Supported Bridges
For patients missing multiple neighboring teeth or lacking strong adjacent teeth, implant-supported bridges provide a highly stable alternative. Unlike traditional bridges that rely on natural teeth, this solution uses dental implants placed in the jawbone to support the restoration.
Benefits include:
- No need to alter neighboring teeth
- Reduced risk of bone loss
- Improved stability
- Long-term durability
- Preservation of surrounding teeth
This advanced dental restoration supports optimal oral health and helps maintain the integrity of healthy teeth around the implants. Learn more about Dental Implants and Implant Restoration.
The Dental Bridge Procedure
Preparation
During your initial appointment with Dr. Cocolis and our team, we conduct a thorough examination, and a treatment plan is created for your unique needs. A local anesthetic ensures comfort while the abutment teeth are prepared for dental crowns. Impressions or digital scans are also taken during this time to help ensure a perfect fit for your final bridge.
A temporary bridge may be placed to protect the prepared teeth while your permanent bridge is crafted in a dental laboratory.
Placement
At your second appointment, we will remove the temporary bridge if one was placed, and the new bridge will be checked for proper fit. Your comfort and the function of your mouth are top priorities when checking for proper bridge placement, and bite alignment will be adjusted if needed. Once we have a perfect fit, the permanent bridge is securely bonded.
You’ll leave our office with your new bridge, restoring chewing ability, appearance, and confidence in your smile.
Are You a Good Candidate for a Dental Bridge?
You may be a good candidate if you:
- Have one or more missing teeth
- Have healthy teeth on either side of the gap
- Maintain good oral hygiene
- Do not have advanced gum disease
A comprehensive exam helps determine whether a dental bridge, dental implants, or partial dentures are the best treatment option. Each patient’s needs are unique, and careful planning ensures long-term success. Our team is always happy to walk you through your options for restoring missing teeth and rebuilding your smile.
Dental Bridge vs. Other Tooth Replacement Options
Dental Implants
Dental implants replace the tooth roots and do not rely on neighboring teeth for support. They are ideal for preserving bone but may require a longer healing period.
Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are removable false teeth secured with metal clasps. While effective, they do not offer the same stability as a permanent bridge.
We will review your options and recommend the most appropriate form of tooth replacement based on your goals and dental health.
Caring for Your Dental Bridge
With proper care, a permanent bridge can last many years. To maintain your restoration:
- Practice good oral hygiene
- Brush twice daily
- Floss under the bridge using specialized tools
- Schedule regular dental visits
- Maintain professional dental hygiene appointments
Proper care helps prevent tooth decay in supporting teeth and protects the gum tissue around the bridge.
Insurance and Financial Considerations
Many dental insurance plans provide partial coverage for a dental bridge when it is medically necessary.
Our team will help you understand your dental insurance benefits, coverage for restorative dental services, financial options, and opportunities for maximizing your insurance plans.

Dental Bridge FAQs
How long does a dental exam and cleaning appointment usually take?
Most dental exams and cleanings take about 60 to 90 minutes. This allows time for a thorough examination, professional cleaning, digital imaging if needed, and a discussion about your oral health.
What if I feel nervous about visiting the dentist?
Dental anxiety is very common, especially for patients who have not visited a dentist in some time. Our team focuses on clear communication, gentle techniques, and a supportive environment to help you feel comfortable throughout your visit.
Do dental cleanings hurt?
For most patients, dental cleanings are comfortable and straightforward. If you have sensitive teeth or inflamed gums, our hygienists can adjust techniques and pacing to ensure the experience remains as gentle as possible.
Are dental X-rays taken at every exam?
Dental X-rays are taken only when necessary to monitor changes in your oral health. They help detect concerns such as cavities between teeth, bone loss, and infection that may not be visible during a visual exam.
Can regular dental visits really prevent larger dental problems?
Yes, routine exams and cleanings allow dental concerns to be detected and treated early. Addressing issues like plaque buildup or small cavities early often prevents more complex procedures later.

EXCELLENT Based on 430 reviews Posted on Matt HTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We've been patients at Dr. Cocolis's for the better part of 16 years. Recently, our hygienist retired (we were big fans of Julie and wish her a wonderful retirement!), and they have had some staffing changes. My 6 month check up yesterday was with the recently hired hygienist, Karen. She was friendly and thorough and did a fabulous job cleaning my teeth. I look forward to having appointments again with her in the future. Thank you!Posted on Christopher WagnerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
